The Town of Danvers seeks applications for the full-time position of Building Commissioner. The Town of Danvers is a reputable Town on the North Shore, providing a supportive and welcoming environment for Town staff, including a commitment to professional development and policies that support a healthy work/life balance.  As a member of the Town’s Leadership Team, the Building Commissioner performs highly responsible work under the umbrella of the of Land Use and Community Services department. This position must adhere to applicable provisions of the M.G.L., local regulations, and bylaws.

Duties include examining building plans to ensure compliance with Massachusetts building codes, ADA, AAB and other related laws, regulations, and standards. The Building Commissioner is responsible for the direct supervision of staff in the Building Division and effective management as it relates to assignments and personnel duties and tasks.

The Town of Danvers zoning administration functions are performed within the Planning and Economic Development division by the Zoning Administrator. Zoning administration/enforcement is not a main component of the Building Commissioner position.

The Town will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying unless an item in the qualification section of the job description is labeled required. Desired qualifications include any combination of a college degree or experience comparable to a Master Apprentice knowledge of construction trades with at least five (5) years of experience in the supervision of building construction, inspection, or design, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be certified as a Massachusetts Local Building Inspector; certification as a Building Inspector/Commissioner or ability to attain certification as a Building Inspector/Commissioner within the first eighteen (18) months is preferred; and must possess a valid state driver’s license issued by the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

This is a full-time, 35 hour per week position with normal work hours of Monday through Wednesday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Thursday 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Friday 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Salary range $77,127 – $102,964 depending on qualifications.  The Town offers excellent benefits including health and retirement plans (more information here).  This position qualifies for an assigned Town vehicle or a vehicle stipend.
