Water Main Replacement on Route 1 and Bypass Installation on Hobart

Posted on April 24, 2020

Construction will soon begin on Centre Street from Route One/Newbury Street to Armory Road and on Hobart Street from Centre Street to Pickering Street to improve the service and reliability of the municipal water distribution systems. The project will involve installation of new water mains, fire hydrants, and valves by R&D Site Development.

The water work is scheduled to begin the week of April 21, and is anticipated to take a couple months to complete. The work will require several short term water service interruptions to all buildings within the neighborhoods, but long term water service interruptions will be avoided through the installation of temporary water bypass.

For the Hobart Street project, in order to take the existing water distribution system out of service to allow new water pipe and valve installation, the contractor will install temporary water mains above the ground along the proposed route of construction. The temporary water mains will be installed, disinfected, and tested; then connected to each building or side street pipe abutting the limits of water bypass. Following completion of the water main installation in the street, the buildings will be reconnected to the buried water main in the street and the temporary water mains will be removed.

Construction activities may require the closing of side streets to through traffic and/or utilizing temporary 2-way traffic on one-way streets to allow access to abutter homes. On the days when construction is ongoing, it is important not to have any cars parked in the roadway from 7am-4pm.  “No Parking” signs will be posted in advance of construction and parking restrictions will remain in effect until construction is complete for that day. Residents  will have access to their driveway and may park on the street after work hours; however, as the project progresses, certain activities may require limited access or parking.
